Halladay makes Philly the favorite, again.

Halladay will be a Philly

Halladay will be a Philly

The National League champion Philadelphia Phillies are swapping aces in a three team deal that would land Cliff Lee in Seattle and Roy Halladay in the city of brotherly love.

The Blue Jays would receive Phillies outfielder Michael Taylor, catching prospect Travis d’Arnaud and pitcher Kyle Drabek. The Mariners would get Cliff Lee which is great for the short term but it appears that the Mariners are giving up their two highest rated pitching prospects to Philly as well.

Phillies outlook
Cole Hamles, Roy Halladay, JA Happ, Jamie Moyer and Pedro Martinez make for a solid rotation which will surely take a lot of pressure off a bullpen which struggled to close out games in 2009. Anyone wanna bet against these guys next year?

Hottie Cliff Lee is no consolation prize

Hottie Cliff Lee is no consolation prize

Mariners outlook
The M’s wanted John Lackey but getting Cliff Lee who performed well down the stretch to pair up with Felix Hernandez is a pretty damn good consolation prize. With John Lackey’s move from the Angels to Boston and Chone Figgins defection from the Angels to Seattle, the AL West just got a lot more competitive.

Blue Jays outlook
A team that was really strong two years ago is in the midst of a major rebuilding program.

Chase-ing Mr October

Chase Utley clubbed a pair of homers, tying Reggie Jackson’s World Series record of five in a single World Series, and Cliff Lee pitched into the eighth inning, as the Philadelphia Phillies held off the New York Yankees ninth inning rally, in route to an 8-6 victory, forcing a Game 6 Wednesday in New York. If a Game 7 is needed to settle this series, it will be held Thursday night, but don’t count on that. Reggie Jackson’s performances in several World Series appearances in the 1970’s earned him the nickname ‘Mr. October’. In the network television controlled era of post season baseball that we live in today, more WS games are played in November than October.

In Game 6 the pressure will be on Andy Pettitte to not only win but to also keep the Phillies second baseman from breaking the former Yankee right fielder’s record. The stats guys over at The Baseball Prospectus say that, by the numbers, Philadelphia has about a 17% chance of winning the final two games in NY and repeating as champs.

Is Andy Pettitte Mr November?

Is Andy Pettitte Mr November?

AJ Burnett’s performance on Monday night, six earned runs in two innings while pitching on just three days rest, has some insiders questioning Yankee Manager Joe Girardi’s decision to go with a three man rotation and think the Phillies odds could be better than what the pure numbers suggest. I say bullshit to that. Andy Pettitte may not have his best stuff in Game 6, he admittedly didn’t have good control in his last start, but with 17 wins he’s the winningest pitcher in MLB post season history. What other option will put the Yankees in a better position to win their 27th title on Wednesday night?

The scary scenario for NY would be to let the Phillies push the series to a winner-take-all Game 7, where anything could happen. The Yankees didn’t let that happen against the Angels and they will not let it happen with Philadelphia. With the frequency of home runs for left-handed batters in the new Yankee Stadium, Utley may surpass Reggie Jackson’s record, yet the real question, for baseball historians to ponder after Game 6 will not be whether Chase Utley is the new Mr October, but rather is Andy Pettitte Mr November.

Simp-Lee Dominant

Last night we were witnesses to one of the most memorable and dominant pitching perfomances in World Series history as Cliff Lee threw a complete game six hitter, allowing only one run and striking out ten. It was a performance, on the game’s biggest stage, that legends are made of.

With all of the talk about CC Sabathia, of which I’m guilty of, we over looked the guy, who, pitching in his first post season, has the lowest ERA in the history of post season pitchers with at least three starts.

Post season ERA’s*
Cliff Lee – 0.54
Harry Breechen – 0.83
Claude Osteen – 0.86
Babe Ruth – 0.87
Sherry Smith – 0.89 (really, there was a guy named Sherry that pitched in the major leagues?)

And this morning few are talking about Chase Utley’s two bombs against Sabathia, both coming with two strikes and a shortened swing. Which brings to mind another question I go back and forth on, Chase Utley, would ya?

Chase Utley's slicked back look

Back to sports, we must remember that this was just one game and the chances of Cliff Lee coming back now to pitch on short rest are about as good as Levi Johnston being totally straight.

The Phillies certainly didn’t seem off their game after a full week of down time and the Yankee bullpen continued to struggle, setting up Pedro Martinez’s return to Yankee stadium for Game 2 tonight.

One last thing, kudos to Fox — you won’t hear those words from me often — for carrying the singing of God Bless America during the 7th inning stretch. There are few things that get me teary eyed, losing my poppers or running out of ambien are two that readily come to mind, but nothing stirs me like GBA at Yankee Stadium.

World Series Preview

If you are looking at this World Series to find hotties in action than you’re sure to be disappointed but that shouldn’t take away from what, on paper, appears to be one of the most interesting World Series in some time. The Cinderellas of the past two years, Rockies and Rays, have been a nice story, but I prefer to see the best teams, loaded with the best players going head to head in a championship game/series, unless of course my favorite team is one of those Cinderella teams.

Certainly there are better looking teams that could have advanced to the World Series but no two teams bring more talent with the possible exception of the Los Angeles Angels. So what are the keys to the series?

Mariano Rivera will, once again, be the difference maker for the Yankees

Mariano Rivera will, once again, be the difference maker for the Yankees

Mariano Rivera versus Philadelphia’s left handed bats
If trailing late in the game, will Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins (switch hitter) and Raul Ibanez be able to hit the best cut-fastball reliever in the history of the game?

Pedro Martinez
Charlie Manuel decided to go with the experience of Pedro Martinez in Game 2 over the so-so Cole Hamels. Pedro threw 7 innings of 2 hit ball in Game 2 of the LCS against the Dodgers. With most experts resigned to the fact that Sabathia will pitch the Yankees to victory in game one it be critical for the Phillies to get a repeat performance from Martinez, or risk going down 2-0.

Impact of layoff
During the regular season the game is an everyday sport, guys get into a rhythm and the pace is familiar. During the post season a travel day exists when the games move to the next city and the Phillies haven’t played in a week. Will the layoff slow Philadelphia’s roll?

Yankees Middle Relief
In order to keep his struggling middle relief, aka Joba ‘The Hut’ Chamberlain, out of the game, look for Yankee’s manager Joe Girardi to depend on his starters a little more so than he did in the ALCS.

Weather
Mother nature impacts both teams evenly, but cold weather normally means an advantage for the pitchers and with the series being played later and later every year to accommodate TV, the weather becomes more of a player.

Prediction
With the possibility of facing CC Sabathia 3 out of 7 games and losing 1/9th of the game because Rivera is about as automatic as a gay man wearing a size too small shirt, I’ve got to pick the Yankees.

Breaking Down the Dodgers and Phillies

In 2007 and 2008 we were all witnesses to two Cinderfellas — Colorado and Tampa Bay — taking center stage and advancing to the World Series. In 2009 the high dollar, big market teams are the only ones left standing. With the nations top two TV markets and Philadelphia represented, expectations of a ratings winner in running high at the MLB offices.

Will it be another East coast / West coast World Series? Will MLB get its dream match up, the Yankees and Dodgers? Or, will it be an all East coast or West coast affair?

Today SportsFags breaks down the National League Championship Series and predicts a winner but first what did we learn from each league’s divisional series?

LDS Observations

Balanced Starting Pitching
With only two exceptions the LDS games were close contests. An often over looked effect of the end of the steroid era is a greater balance and emphasis placed on starting pitching. With a drop off in run production there’s an increased scrutiny on defense, managerial decisions, pitching match ups and most importantly starting pitching — and that’s good for baseball.

Sloppy Play
The first round of the playoffs were plagued with defensive miscues, poor base running and bad calls from the umpires. Fans expect to see more focus and concentration this time of year but baseball’s history is full of post season screw ups so don’t expect that to change now.

Bullpens
There are two schools of thought as to how the post-steroid era has impacted relief pitching. Some believe the drop in offense has elevated the role of the bullpen. As proof, they point to close games decided late with relievers playing critical roles in determining the outcome. On the contrary others believe that with starters producing more innings the bullpen’s role is diminished.

The truth is somewhere in the middle and during the regular season you could argue either side. However when the playoffs begin the bullpen often plays a larger role.

Post Season Factors

For all the hype the every day players and starting pitchers receive during the regular season when it comes down to the playoffs, games are decided late, by bench players called upon to take advantage of favorable pitching match ups.

So between the Dodgers and Phillies who has the deeper, more versatile bench? Which team can rely on their bullpen in late inning, pressure packed, situational match ups. And which manager do you trust will make the better decisions?

Bench: Advantage Dodgers – Juan Pierre, Jim Thome, Orlando Hudson and NLDS hero Mark Loretta give the Dodgers several players who present match up problems for a shaky Philadelphia bullpen.

Bullpen: Advantage Dodgers – Los Angeles ranked first in bullpen ERA, WHIP (Walk and Hits per Innings Pitched), opponent batting average and opponent OPS. The Phillies had two blown saves against the Rockies in the NLDS and their bullpen ERA is a full run higher than the Dodgers this post season.

Manager: Advantage Dodgers – Even though Joe Torre was blessed with the best players while with the Yankees others have failed in similar situations. Considering all of the Dodgers starting pitching problems this season, just getting this team within four wins of the World Series may just be Torre’s best performance.

Prediction
Dodgers in six.

Rockies and Phillies Preview

As you read through my baseball post season reviews you will notice two recurring themes. Who’s playing better down the stretch and what team has the pitching rotation (starters, middle relief and closer) settled.

The Rays of ‘08 and the Rockies of ‘07 can testify to how closing strong gives your team the confidence needed to advance deep into the playoffs. This year the Rockies were the best team in baseball after a horrible start. In September, Colorado was 18-9 and closed the last 14 games 9-5. The Phillies played well in September going 17-13 but didn’t play all that well, 6-8, in their last 14 games. One could argue the Rockies games were more meaningful thus they placed more emphasis on the last two weeks, yet Colorado is playing better coming into this series.

Both teams have solid starters to choose from. Philadelphia will go with Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and then decide on whether JA Happ, Joe Blanton or Pedro Martinez will start game 3. While the Rockies will counter with Ubaldo Jimenez, Aaron Cook and Jason Hammel which means All-Star Jason Marquis could be available for relief. Even though Cliff Lee has struggled some down the stretch I still give the Phillies a slight advantage with starting pitching.

However, the Rockies have a major advantage in the bullpen. Philadelphia’s bullpen has been it’s achilles heel all season and look for that to continue in this series. For that reason the overall pitching advantage goes to the Rockies.
