For everyone outside of south Florida, LeBron’s decision to leave Cleveland was brutal. We haven’t witnessed this much useless media attention aimed at one person since….well, since ESPN decided to make Brett Favre’s decision to play or not to play a daily soap opera.
Yet there’s so much hypocrisy in the reaction of the media, the fans, and even the owner.LeBron was a FREE AGENT (sorry I just read Dan Gilbert’s letter and feel compelled to type like a third-grade girl), meaning he’s earned the right to go anywhere he wants to. Yet the same pompous writers and broadcasters who tell us it’s all about winning championships will now tell us it’s about legacy, and who you win with.
Jordan had Pippen, Magic had Kareem, Wade and Kobe had Shaq and Boston had Garnett, Pierce and Allen, so why can’t LeBron join Wade and Bosh?
Are you telling me that good sports writers don’t have good editors? Im sure they do it all on their own.
What Would You Do?
LeBron wakes up today in South Beach not Cleveland, playing on a team with Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. Who’s the loser here? Not LeBron. Sure Cleveland fans will hate him but that’s why they’re called fans, they are fanatical.
Anyone one of us in LeBron’s position would’ve done the same thing. Those few idiotic fans who burned LeBron’s jersey after the announcement are the same ones who vacation in Florida; nobody goes to vacation in Ohio. LeBron James tried recruiting Chris Bosh to Cleveland but Bosh didn’t want to play there.
LeBron’s Ego?
LeBron put aside his ego to join a team with other stars. I love these amatuer pyschologists who’ve decided LeBron’s got a big ego. If Lebron was so ego driven then wouldn’t he have headed to New York or even Chicago versus joining what everyone sees as Dwayne Wade’s team?
On the day where it appears that Seattle pitcher Cliff Lee is headed to the Yankees we’re reminded this kind of thing has been going on in baseball for generations. Yes a trade is different than a free agent signing, but very few free agents turn down the chance to win championships in New York.
I’m not taking up for LeBron. I don’t like this much either, but it’s his right. He spent seven years in Cleveland, he even re-signed with Cleveland a few years back. He’s earned the right to move on and win a championship.
In the aftermath we get Cleveland owner Dan Gilbert calling out LeBron’s loyalty. The same Dan Gilbert who tried to hire Tom Izzo away from his alma mater and fired head coach Mike Brown after winning 60+ games for the past two seasons.
Loyalty is a tricky thing, it all depends on your perspective.
