“The Chosen Few” Fight For Rights

The “Chosen Few” play with skill and huge enthusiasm despite the scrappy dirt wasteground bordered by a large puddle on which they are obliged to train, a few hundred meters from the imposing Constitutional Court in central Johannesburg.

“We tried many other places,” said Lerato Marumolwa, one of the best players, pointing ruefully at a well-kept green pitch 500 meters away. “But they just won’t let us in.”

Such frustration is minor compared to the so-called “corrective” rape, murder, insults and beatings that South African lesbians have frequently suffered, despite the widely admired, post-apartheid constitution which was the first in the world to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation.

More than 30 lesbians are reported to have been murdered in the last decade, and the British NGO ActionAid said in a report last year there was an increasing trend of homophobic attacks and murders by men who believed they would “cure” lesbian women.

Marumolwa, 21, and her team mates are more than just soccer players. They campaign to overturn prejudice against black lesbians, which is greatest in the townships where most of them live.

The group demonstrated outside the court where one of the murderers of former South African national women’s soccer team player Eudy Simelane was tried and sentenced last year.

In a shocking crime that exposed the amount of hatred suffered by lesbians in the black community, Simelane was raped and stabbed 25 times in a township on the edge of Johannesburg.

The Chosen Few was launched in 2004 by the Forum for the Empowerment of Women (FEW) and the players say the team has become a refuge for them, in contrast to the danger and prejudice they suffer in their townships.

USA Excited About World Cup Opportunity

The FIFA World Cup is quickly approaching, and countries around the world are gearing up to watch their teams compete. Although football (soccer) is not as popular in the U.S. as it is worldwide, attention to the sport is growing. This year, American fans are getting ready to cheer on their team, especially with recent news that they may have something even bigger to look forward to in 2018 or 2022- the hope of hosting the tournament for the second time. Germany, France, Italy and Mexico are the only countries to have ever hosted twice in the tournament’s almost 80 year history. This time around, Bill Clinton’s chief advisor, Doug Band, is giving the U.S. a serious chance at becoming 5th on this list.

Band is the latest addition to the Board of Directors for the U.S. Bid Committee. While the magnitude of the World Cup enticed a lot of high profile individuals to join the Board of Directors (such as, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, etc), having the relatively lower profiled Doug Band as the face of the committee may just give the U.S. their biggest bargaining chip yet.

Band has helped implement philanthropic initiatives in over 170 countries. His work through the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) has helped raise millions of dollars for relief efforts thus touching thousands of lives. His reputation precedes him throughout other countries and he is respected by them for his efforts. Having him represent the U.S. Bid will help promote America as a great location to host the World Cup by highlight his international endeavors and demonstrating the embrace Americans have for diverse cultures.

For Band, this is nothing short of a win-win situation. First of all, Band happens to be a soccer fan and it’s always great when you can participate in something you’ve always had a passion for. More importantly, Doug Band is heavily involved in the political industry and currently one of the hottest topics happens to be the economy. It’s no secret that one guaranteed outcome of hosting the World Cup is that the city hosting the games will benefit immensely from the surge of tourists stimulating the local and regional economy. Many improvements will likely be made in preparation for the influx of media coverage and visitors alike. Those benefits will, in turn, extend to the national economy. Therefore, by joining the Board of Directors, Band is jointly responsible for a unique effort that could help ignite a weakened American economy if the World Cup is successfully brought stateside. Ultimately, taking advantage of the opportunity to join the U.S. Bid Committee gives Doug Band the chance to make a real impact on thousands of American lives and really make a name for himself here on his home turf.

Winning the World Cup bid could also help extinguish any negative sentiments that may still be lingering as a result of the unsuccessful attempt by the U.S. (Chicago) to land the Olympics a few months ago. Regardless of the sport’s relative lack of followers currently here in the states, to have the event back in the US would undoubtedly unite the nation and spark much more American interest in the sport – bringing them one step closer to fully engaging in the “globe’s game.” As proof of this argument, the first time the U.S. won the bid to host the World Cup (1994) the games attracted the largest attendance ever (and still holds the record), for a single U.S. sporting event with 3.6 million in attendance, and 16.9 million American viewers watching from home.

There are a total of 9 other countries bidding for 2018 and 2022, including the likes of Indonesia, Russia, and Australia. The decision for both years will be made when FIFA’s executive committee meets in December 2010, after visiting all locations to be considered. Until then, Americans will remain hopeful about the opportunity to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022 while cheering on this year’s team.

Congress and the BCS or Not

Why is Congress wasting time and money even talking about the College Football National Championship format? There are some sports issues they should be involved in like Concussions, Title IX and maybe Gambling. It all boils down to a couple of members are not happy because “their” school did not get invited. What about free enterprise?
Do we actually want Notre Dame playing in this every year (even this year) because the Pope may tell Catholic members of  Congress they should not vote for a bill unless ND is assured one spot. Or more Liberal members may not vote for a bill that would allow Florida State or Illinois a seat at the table because they are using Native American mascots. Oh and if a school is in a state that recognizes equal marriage or gives partner benefits that does not agree with DOMA- they may have to comply with that too.

I know some of this sounds far-fetched but look at all the absurd laws and amendments that Washington has passed over the years on both the left and right. Let the state legislatures in Alabama (not this year but in the past), Idaho and Utah or where ever fans feel slighted pass proclamations declaring them National Champs. Arguing about who is Number 1 is half the fun.  However, I am not advocating that some type of playoff should not be put in place but I want Congress to stay out of College Football!

Miracle catcher Brandon Stokley overcomes the odds

His 87-yard touchdown catch with just 11 seconds left on Sunday provided a 12-7 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, but Miracle pass catcher Brandon Stokley is used to overcoming long odds.

As a sophomore in high school Stokley decided against a career in football due to his size. At 5-4 and 115 lb. he figured that baseball or basketball may better suit his size. However a new football coach, thinking Brandon may excel in a new spread offense, asked Stokley to try out.

In college he played for four years for his dad at Southwestern Louisiana (now known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) where he caught passes from quarterback Jake Delhomme.

As he enters his 10th season, Stokley now stands tall at 6 feet, 193 pounds. He has been a part of two Super Bowl champions: Baltimore in 2000 (XXXV) and Indianapolis in 2006 (XLI).

And on Sunday he happened to be in the right place at the right time and has given Broncos’ fans something to cheer about after a summer full of drama bad news.

Alex Smith – Ready for a Rebound?

The former #1 overall draft pick in 2005 is healthy, married and ready to challenge one of his groomsmen for the 49ers starting job.

So how did this 6’4″ 217 lb former #1 draft pick get to this point? Talk about a perfect storm, consider the shoulder injuries, four offensive coordinators in four years and a less than compassionate head coach.

So here are our reasons to pull for Alex in 2009:

  • For starters he’s really fucking hot
  • Reason #2, this isn’t a dumb football jock who just couldn’t adjust to the NFL. In just two years Alex graduated from Utah with a 3.7 GPA with a degree in Economics. He followed that up with a 40 out of 50 on the Wonderlic test at the NFL combine. Putting that in perspective consider the average for NFL QBs on the Wonderlic is 24 and for a chemist it’s 26.
  • Alex has dealt with an ongoing shoulder injury that led to a highly publicized rift with former 49er head coach Mike Nolan
  • Wanting to remain a 49er, Alex renegotiated his contract during the off-season and will now battle with Shaun Hill for the starting job in 2009
  • Personal tragedy also struck Alex in 2008 when his best friend took his own life

Plagued by interceptions since his rookie campaign, Alex has never had a season with more TDs than INTs. If he can cut down on the interceptions then we believe a healthy Smith has a chance for a big season.

UPDATE: Alex Smith was named the starter in Week 7 of the 2009 season.
