It was Albert Einstein who was quoted as saying, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. Einstein passed away in 1955 at the age of 75 so he probably wasn’t studied on the concept of obsessive compulsive order, or OCD as we call it today. Over the past three decades advances in the field of neurochemistry have allowed scientists to develop a theory of an abnormality in OCD patients linked to seratonin.

OK, so I’m not that smart and you’re probably wondering how this all relates to sports huh? Well, when it comes to Jay Cutler, I’m left to ponder whether he’s insane by Einstein’s definition or if he suffers from OCD by today’s definition. We wrote about Cutler after Week 1 of the NFL season, see story here, and after seeing his performance last night I offer that nothing has changed and Cutler expects different results from doing the same thing over and over. So maybe Einstein’s definition of insanity applies to Cutler.

Cutler, whose ego consistently overcomes his natural physical ability, continues to throw into double and triple coverage, late over the middle and off his front foot with little or no follow through because he thinks his arm is strong enough to overcome the situation. Granted, two of his five interceptions last night, that’s right I said five interceptions last night in the 10-6 loss to San Francisco, were the result of a player falling down and a referee being in the way of a receiver.

Cutler became a target of ridicule, except in Chicago, with his immature departure from Denver during the off season. Bears’ fans who understand Cutler’s long-term contract situation, his performance this year (17 INTs) and the Bears 4-5 record are re-thinking their initial embrace of the troubled quarterback. Cutler was blessed with a dynamic offense, better receivers and an offensive-minded coach in Denver. Compare that to Chicago where his most trusted receiver and favorite drinking buddy is hottie TE Greg Olsen.

For Cutler to become the QB Chicago needs he’s got to understand that sometimes the best play you can make for your team is no play at all. In other words, when the defense has you beat and you are on the run, either throw the ball away or run. Trying to force the ball into tight situations because you could in college or with some success in Denver, when you had better receivers, is not going to work in Chicago. Cutler’s picks in the red zone, 9 in the past 2 seasons including 2 last night, have cost his team wins. Two made FGs, in a four point loss last night, would have been the difference between winning and losing.

Doing something over and over and expecting different results means that you, by Einstein’s definition, are insane which leaves me to think that I must be OCD, not only because I have a brain abnormality but because I can’t stop writing about Cutler’s deficiences. Or maybe I’m insane because I continue to nag my husband and expect him to change?
